By the time this holiday season is over, it is highly likely you will find yourself with a few wardrobe acquisitions. Woohoo!! That brings us to an important question: Is your closet ready? If not, now is the perfect time to tidy things up and make your storage space really work for you. It doesn't matter whether you have a huge walk-in or a challenging cubby because the same principle works anywhere: Keep only the things you really use and organize them in a way that makes the most sense to you. You will be happy to know that there is no right or wrong method. That doesn't give you a free pass, though - there does need to be some form of organization!
Where do you begin? We think grouping clothes in their respective categories is the easiest way to go like shirts with shirts, pants with pants, etc...Within each category, it's helpful to organize even further. So, for dresses and tops/shirts, consider categorizing by sleeve length and then organizing those sections by color and print. For pants, color grouping is definitely the way to go.
In a recent post on apartmenttherapy.com, Nicole Anzia of Neatnik offered some fabulous and very honest advice and we couldn't agree more:
"Very few people have closets and drawers that resemble those in catalogues. Trust me. I've been in a lot of houses and apartments and even after we've totally reorganized a space, it doesn't look like an ad for The Container Store. It looks great and works properly, but it is a space that is used by an actual human being, not one that has been carefully staged by a team of stylists and marketers for a non-existent resident. You will ultimately be disappointed if perfection is your goal. The goal is to set up a space that works well for your needs. That is success."
Clearly seeing what you have and knowing where everything is makes dressing much easier every day. It's like a gift to yourself, and you will be really happy that you have a clean uncluttered space with room ready and waiting for those other awesome gifts that will be taking up residence shortly. Make an effort to reserve some quality time for your closet during this hectic time of year. If you're way too busy or overwhelmed, our Closets to Impress service does the work for you. During this comprehensive styling session we assess your wardrobe and then custom organize your space.
So matter how you do it, just do it - cheers to making your closet tidy and bright!
