With the flu season in full swing, it's wise to take every precaution possible. You know the drill: wash your hands frequently, eat healthy, exercise regularly, get plenty of rest, and then HIT THE LAUNDRY ROOM ONCE A WEEK TO WASH YOUR COLD WEATHER GEAR! That's because those oh so stylish gloves, scarves and hats adding the finishing touches to your winter attire are doing lots more than just keeping you fashionably warm and cozy...they're harboring lots of unwelcome germs. Leather requires dry cleaning so it's best to wear "washing machine friendly" cotton or hand washable wool versions as much as possible. After washing, dry them on high heat for at least 28 minutes to kill viruses. If heat drying is not an option, air drying in direct sunlight is an effective substitute since the sun's ultraviolet light has disinfecting properties.
Now that you've got the washing down, the next step is to WEAR your gloves with care. Slip them off temporarily when you must handle objects that lots of other people are touching like handles and subway poles, don't stuff wet gloves into your pocket (they need time to air dry to kill bacteria), and whatever you do, NEVER remove them with your mouth! The smartest method is to take off your gloves from back to front just like healthcare workers do.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, fashionistas. So, we hope you'll stay chic, CLEAN, warm and WELL this winter!

You might say 2018 has arrived in a "purple haze" since Pantone announced Ultra Violet as the Color of the Year. That means you can expect to see this regal hue popping up in everything from clothing to decor and is why we are beginning January sharing a few ways you can incorporate the shade of the moment into your life...
First things first, Ultra Violet is not for the feint of heart. That being said, even if you never thought you could wear purple, there are ways you can add a touch or two of this blue-based version to brighten up your look. Eye shadow and nail polish are great ways to test the waters. If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, try a shot of the eye-catcher in an accessory but just don't overdo it and remember our fave motto: less is always more. If your skin and hair tones go with it, there will be plenty of ultra violet options in clothing. A faux fur coat in purple definitely won't work for everyone but is a sure fire way to get noticed when it does!
On the home front, purple pairs very well with the grey decorating tones that have become popular in recent years making it super easy to give a room a refresh with something as simple as a throw, an accent piece or pillows.
While we're on the subject of grey, our "silver haired" fashionistas out there will likely become fast friends with ultra violet since it is so complementary. (As a side note, Vicki's Mom has been rocking the shade for years and will be happy to know she is now totally on trend :)!)
Have we sold you on the color of the year yet? If not, maybe Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of The Pantone Color Institute will. She claims ultra violet "takes our awareness and potential to a higher level." Hmmmmm...who can argue with that?!?! So, we say cheers to the POWER OF PURPLE and Happy New Year to all!
